Freelancer membership plans compared

Updated 23 October 2026

Quick answer

Freelancer.com has a free plan and four paid memberships: Basic, Plus, Professional and Premier. At the time of writing they cost $4.99 to $99 a month and give 50, 100, 300 or 1,500 bids a month (free accounts get 6), with bids refilling gradually: Plus refills about one bid every 7.3 hours and Premier about one every 30 minutes. Plus is the usual first upgrade for an individual freelancer.

What Freelancer membership plans are there?

Freelancer.com has a free account and four paid memberships: Basic, Plus, Professional and Premier. Each paid plan gives you more bids a month, more skills on your profile and a few extra features. Here they are at the time of writing (October 2026), in US dollars:

Refill rates for Plus and Premier come from accounts connected to MoreGigs; the others are from Freelancer's own help pages. Freelancer notes that currency and taxes may vary by country, and plans and prices change, so check Freelancer's membership page before you buy.

How Freelancer bids refill

Your bid allowance isn't a lump sum that resets on the first of the month. Freelancer returns used bids one at a time, at a set interval for your plan, until you're back at your monthly total.

From accounts connected to MoreGigs, Plus refills one bid every 26,297 seconds: about every 7.3 hours, which spreads 100 bids across an average month (Freelancer's help pages round it to 7.5 hours). Premier refills about one bid every 30 minutes (around 1,800 seconds). Freelancer lists about one every 120 hours for free accounts, 14.5 hours for Basic and 2.5 hours for Professional.

Two things follow from this:

  • A full bid balance wastes refills. Refills stop at your cap, so any refill time that passes while you're full is lost.
  • Spending everything on day one leaves you waiting. On Plus, an empty balance means roughly seven hours between bids. Steady, selective bidding keeps a few bids ready for the projects you really want.

Your Freelancer dashboard shows how many bids you have left.

What each Freelancer plan includes

Free

6 bids a month, refilling about one every five days, and up to 20 skills. Fine for setting up a profile and trying the platform, but six bids rarely go far.

Basic ($4.99 a month)

50 bids and 50 skills. You also get unlimited project bookmarks, a custom cover photo, eligibility for the Preferred Freelancer Program (other conditions apply), one entry per contest and five employer followings, so you hear when a client you follow posts a new project.

Plus ($9.99 a month)

100 bids and 80 skills, plus everything in Basic. Plus adds a feature Freelancer calls Client Engagement, daily withdrawal requests, free project extensions, five external invoices, ten employer followings, two entries per contest and eligibility for high-value project bidding (conditions apply). At the time of writing the membership page offers Plus with a one-month free trial.

Professional ($49 a month)

300 bids and 100 skills. On top of Plus you get Bid Insights, Premium Freelancer Insights, free sealed projects, four portfolio categories, 15 external invoices, 20 employer followings and five entries per contest.

Premier ($99 a month)

1,500 bids and 400 skills, with unlimited employer followings and external invoices, free NDA projects, ten entries per contest and a call button on your bid card.

Paid plans also include free highlighted and sealed contest entries each month, from 3 and 12 on Basic up to 30 and 150 on Premier.

Freelancer Plus membership: the usual first upgrade

For most individual freelancers, Plus is the plan to try first. 100 bids a month works out at about three a day, enough to bid on every good match in a focused niche without rushing. 80 skills covers most people's real range, and the free trial month lets you see whether the extra bids turn into conversations before you pay.

At $9.99, Plus costs about the same per bid as Basic (roughly 10 cents), so if you can use more than 50 good bids a month, Plus is the better buy. It also adds daily withdrawal requests and high-value project bidding eligibility, which Basic doesn't include.

Looking for Upwork's plan? Upwork also sells a membership called Freelancer Plus. It's a different product on a different marketplace; this guide is about Freelancer.com.

Which Freelancer membership plan suits you?

  • Free: you're setting up your profile or testing the waters, and you bid only now and then.
  • Basic: you freelance part-time in one narrow skill and send one or two bids a day at most.
  • Plus: you're building a steady flow of work and want to bid on every good match in your niche, about three a day.
  • Professional: you freelance full-time across several related skills and can write around ten tailored proposals a day.
  • Premier: you run an agency or a team, cover a wide range of skills and can genuinely use up to 50 bids a day.

A simple test: count the projects you'd really want to bid on in a typical week. If that number is well below your plan's allowance, a bigger plan won't help. If you regularly run out of bids while good projects are still appearing, it might.

Is a paid Freelancer membership worth it?

It can be, if bids are what's holding you back. Dividing price by bids at the time of writing, Basic and Plus cost about 10 cents a bid, Professional about 16 cents and Premier about 7 cents. Cheap per bid, but only if you use them well.

  • Membership buys bids and features, not a lower commission. Freelancer's fees page lists the 10% freelancer project fee with no plan discount; the savings paid plans mention are on extras such as project upgrades. Our guide to Freelancer.com fees covers the rest.
  • More bids don't fix weak proposals. If your bids aren't getting replies, work on the proposal first; our Freelancer proposal template is a good starting point.
  • It comes down to one project. The real question is whether the extra bids are likely to turn into even one project a month you wouldn't otherwise get. At $9.99, Plus needs very little extra work to cover its cost; Premier at $99 needs a lot more.

Monthly or annual billing, upgrading and cancelling

  • Annual plans save up to 20%. At the time of writing that's $54 a year for Basic, $478.80 for Professional and $958.80 for Premier.
  • Upgrading gives you the new plan's benefits straight away.
  • Downgrading keeps your current benefits until the plan you paid for expires, then moves you to the lower plan.
  • Cancelling is possible at any time from your user settings with no extra charge; billing stops at the end of your current period.
  • Renewals are automatic on your subscription anniversary. If your funds are short, Freelancer says it will keep trying to renew for up to 30 days.

Make every Freelancer bid count

Whatever plan you choose, bids are limited, so where you spend them matters more than how many you have.
