Freelancing in Bangladesh: platforms, payments, tax and the freelancer ID
Updated 23 October 2026
Freelancing in Bangladesh means earning from overseas clients through platforms such as Fiverr, Upwork and Freelancer.com, or directly. PayPal still doesn't let Bangladeshi residents receive payments at the time of writing, so most freelancers are paid through Payoneer (to a bank account or bKash) or a platform's own bank payout in taka, and freelance earnings received through banks can qualify for a 2.5% government cash incentive. The free government freelancer ID at freelancers.gov.bd, for citizens with at least USD 50 of verified freelance income, helps with banking and official recognition.
Freelancing in Bangladesh today
Bangladesh is one of the world's largest suppliers of online freelance work. Researchers at the Oxford Internet Institute, who track the major freelance platforms for their Online Labour Index, found that about 15% of the online freelancers they observed in 2021 were in Bangladesh, and that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh together accounted for more than half.
2026 has also been a busy year for freelancers' rules. The government launched a free official freelancer ID in January, Bangladesh Bank relaxed how freelancers receive and hold foreign earnings in July, and the 2026-27 budget moved to widen the income tax exemption for freelance income. This guide covers all of it, plus the practical side: platforms, skills, getting paid without PayPal, pricing, staying online and avoiding the scams that target new freelancers.
Which freelancing platforms are popular in Bangladesh?
| Platform | How it works | Good to know in Bangladesh |
|---|---|---|
| Fiverr | You list packaged services (gigs) and buyers order them | Very popular for design, video and digital marketing; withdraw through Payoneer or bank |
| Upwork | Clients post jobs; you spend Connects to send proposals | Good for longer and hourly contracts; competitive for new profiles |
| Freelancer.com | Clients post projects and freelancers bid; contests too | Local site at freelancer.com.bd; pays out in taka to personal bank accounts |
| Direct clients | Clients found through LinkedIn, referrals or your own site | Best rates once you have a portfolio; you handle contracts and the bank transfer |
Fiverr is a common starting point because buyers come to you, and many freelancers add Upwork or Freelancer.com once they have reviews. There's no single best platform: pick one or two that suit your skill and how you like to find work. Our comparisons of the best freelancing websites, Fiverr vs Upwork and Freelancer vs Upwork go into the differences.
In-demand freelancing skills in Bangladesh
The government's own free freelancing training has focused on graphic design, digital marketing and web development, which tells you where a lot of the demand is. Skills that overseas clients hire for regularly include:
- Graphic design: logos, social media creatives, print, packaging and T-shirt designs.
- Digital marketing: SEO, social media management, Facebook and Google ads, email marketing.
- Web development: WordPress, Shopify, landing pages and front-end work.
- Video editing and motion graphics: YouTube videos, reels and explainer animations.
- App and software development, including UI and UX design.
- Bangla content and translation for businesses reaching Bengali speakers worldwide.
Be careful with "data entry": genuine data work exists, but it pays little and it's the category scammers use most. Our guide to freelancing skills helps you choose.
How to get paid as a freelancer in Bangladesh (without PayPal)
The most searched question about freelancing in Bangladesh is how to get paid, because PayPal still doesn't let Bangladeshi residents receive money. The only PayPal service that reached the country, Xoom, is for sending money to Bangladesh, not for receiving client payments. The options that work, at the time of writing (October 2026):
| Method | How it works | Costs and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer.com Express Withdrawal | From your Freelancer balance to a Bangladeshi bank account, in BDT | Personal accounts only (not company accounts); $1 fee, $50 minimum; usually 3 to 5 business days |
| Payoneer to bank | Receive from platforms in USD, then withdraw to your own local bank account in taka | Conversion fees apply; check Payoneer's current rates before you withdraw |
| Payoneer to bKash | Link Payoneer in the bKash app (remittance section) and withdraw in real time | Minimum Tk 1,000 and maximum Tk 2,50,000 per transaction; bKash lists a 3% conversion fee plus $1 charged by Payoneer; the government incentive doesn't apply |
| Direct bank transfer (SWIFT) | A client abroad sends money straight to your bank | Can qualify for the freelancer cash incentive; your bank may charge and ask for evidence such as a platform statement |
| Wise (client side) | You can't open a Wise account in Bangladesh, but a client abroad can send taka to your bank, bKash or Nagad | Wise doesn't allow business transfers to BDT, so it suits individual clients only |
| PayPal | Not available for receiving payments in Bangladesh at the time of writing | Don't use someone else's PayPal account or a paid PayPal service: it breaks PayPal's terms and you can lose the money |
Bangladesh Bank's 2026 rules for freelancers
A circular in July 2026 made life easier for freelancers who are paid through banks. According to reports of it:
- ICT freelancers can keep up to 50% of export earnings in foreign currency in an Exporters' Retention Quota (ERQ) account, and other service exporters up to 30%.
- Inward remittances up to US$20,000 can be credited without a formal declaration.
- Banks can accept electronic evidence, such as platform statements and emails, instead of traditional export documents.
- Banks may issue dual-currency "Freelancer Cards".
A separate July 2026 circular lets banks partner with foreign digital payment providers. That has raised hopes of PayPal arriving, but at the time of writing no launch had been announced. Ask your bank which of these facilities it offers, and keep the encashment certificates it issues for your payments: they're useful for tax and for your freelancer ID.
The freelancer cash incentive
For 2026-27 (July 2026 to June 2027), Bangladesh Bank set a 2.5% cash incentive for individual freelancers exporting software and IT-enabled services. It applies to earnings that come in through banks, and banks have their own application rules and deadlines. Don't confuse it with the 2.5% incentive on expatriates' remittances, which doesn't cover freelancing, and note that bKash says the incentive doesn't apply to Payoneer withdrawals to bKash.
The government freelancer ID card (freelancers.gov.bd)
Bangladesh has an official, government-recognised digital ID for freelancers, issued through freelancers.gov.bd by the ICT Division and the Department of ICT. The platform was formally launched in January 2026. According to the site at the time of writing:
- Who can apply: Bangladeshi citizens with a valid National ID (NID) card.
- Earnings requirement: at least USD 50 of verified income from freelance or digital work in the last 12 months.
- Cost: there's no application fee.
- Validity: three years, then you renew online with proof of ongoing work and the same income threshold.
- What you get: a digital card with a QR code, which the government says should make banking, loans and credit, incentives and training easier to access.
Older guides mention a fee and a much higher earnings requirement from an earlier version of the scheme, and privately issued "freelancer cards" also circulated before. Use the official site only, and never pay an agent to apply for you.
Free training
The ICT Division has also run free freelancing training, such as the Learning and Earning Development Project (graphic design, digital marketing and web development) and the Her Power project for women. Intakes change, so check the ICT Division's official channels before applying, and be wary of private institutes that promise guaranteed income.
Do freelancers pay tax in Bangladesh?
This is general information only. Freelancer tax in Bangladesh has changed several times recently, so speak to a tax lawyer or income tax practitioner before relying on it.
- The existing exemption. Under the Sixth Schedule of the Income Tax Act 2023, as amended by the Finance Act 2024, income from a list of IT and IT-enabled services has been exempt from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027, on conditions that include filing your income tax return and receiving payments through formal banking channels.
- The 2026-27 budget. The budget presented in June 2026 proposed extending the exemption to income from all types of freelancing and content creation, and removing VAT on freelancers' services. Parliament passed the Finance Bill on 29 June 2026, and professional tax guides on the Finance Act 2026 list freelancing and content creation income as exempt, subject to the rules on inward remittances.
- Source tax deductions. In June 2026 the National Board of Revenue said there was no provision to deduct tax from freelancers' remittances, after reports of some banks deducting it. If your bank deducts tax from a freelance payment, ask it in writing which rule it's applying.
- Get an e-TIN and file a return. An exemption isn't the same as not filing. Keep platform statements, bank encashment certificates and invoices for every payment.
Internet and power: protect your deadlines
Reliability is a real issue for Bangladeshi freelancers. During the nationwide internet shutdown in July 2024, when broadband and mobile data were cut for several days, freelancers reported cancelled orders, lost clients and bad reviews, and some say clients stayed wary afterwards. In December 2025 the interim government approved a Telecommunication (Amendment) Ordinance that is reported to bar internet shutdowns, but outages can still happen, and 2026 brought heavy load-shedding during fuel shortages.
- Put your router and laptop on an IPS or UPS, so a power cut doesn't end a client call.
- Keep a second connection: mobile data on a different operator, or a second broadband line if you work full-time.
- Consider Starlink in remote areas. It launched in Bangladesh in May 2025, at launch priced from Tk 4,200 a month plus Tk 47,000 for the equipment, so it's mainly a backup for people far from good broadband.
- Build buffers into deadlines and deliver early where you can.
- Tell clients straight away if an outage will delay you. Silence is what costs reviews.
How to price for international clients
Underpricing is the trap. Clients in the US, UK or Australia compare you with freelancers everywhere, so a price far below the rest of the bids can look like a warning sign rather than a bargain.
- Quote in US dollars and price inside the client's budget, towards the middle once you have reviews.
- Add up your real costs: platform fees, withdrawal and conversion costs, your IPS and internet, and unpaid time spent finding work. The freelance rate calculator helps.
- An illustration: if you want $100 from a fixed-price Freelancer.com project after its 10% fee, bid about $112. Then allow for conversion when you withdraw.
- Use the time difference. Bangladesh is 5 to 6 hours ahead of the UK and 10 to 11 hours ahead of the US East Coast, depending on daylight saving. Overnight delivery for US clients can be a selling point; just be clear about when you're available for calls.
First steps on Freelancer.com from Bangladesh
- Sign up on freelancer.com or its local site, freelancer.com.bd.
- Complete your profile with a real photo, a specific headline, a short summary, portfolio samples and an hourly rate in USD.
- Add the skills you can genuinely deliver. A free account can list up to 20, and you can only bid on projects that need at least one of them.
- Verify your email, phone, payment method and identity (KYC) early; withdrawals need it.
- Take an exam or two in your main skill to give a new profile some proof.
- Keep at least $20 in your account, Freelancer's minimum balance for bidding. A free account gets 6 bids a month.
- Bid early on new, clearly written projects with few bids, with a short proposal written for that client. Our proposal template and free AI proposal generator help.
- Set up Express Withdrawal to a personal bank account in your own name. Company accounts aren't supported for Bangladesh, the first withdrawal is held for 15 days, and later ones usually take 3 to 5 business days.
- Apply for the freelancer ID once you have USD 50 of verified earnings.

Freelancing scams in Bangladesh to avoid
- Buying, selling or renting accounts. "Ready" Upwork, Fiverr or Freelancer accounts with reviews break every platform's rules and get closed, often with the money in them. In 2026 Fiverr suspended hundreds of accounts linked to a single Bangladeshi firm accused of controlling accounts opened in other people's names. Never lend your NID or passport details for someone else's account.
- Courses that promise guaranteed income. Real training teaches a skill; nobody can guarantee you orders. Be especially wary of institutes that also sell you an account or "sure" projects.
- Earning apps and investment schemes. Apps that pay you to watch ads or recruit others, then ask for deposits, have repeatedly turned out to be frauds investigated by the police.
- PayPal and payment "services". People selling PayPal accounts or offering to receive payments for you. You have no protection if they keep the money.
- Informal dollar dealers. Selling dollars outside the banking system risks fraud, breaks foreign exchange rules and means you miss the cash incentive and the paper trail you need for tax.
- Fake clients who move the chat to WhatsApp or Telegram, ask for a fee, or want your login or a verification code.
Report fake clients on the platform itself. For crimes, call 999 in an emergency or contact your local police station; women facing online harassment can also contact Police Cyber Support for Women on 01320000888. Our guide to Freelancer scams lists the platform red flags.
Bid early on Freelancer.com, even at night
Clients post projects at all hours, including while it's night in Dhaka, and on Freelancer the first good bids get read first. MoreGigs runs on its own servers around the clock, checks new projects every couple of minutes and skips likely scams, tiny budgets, crowded or stale listings and off-skill work. For each good match it writes a fresh proposal from your real profile, priced inside the client's budget, paced to your Freelancer plan so your bids last the month. There's a 24-hour free trial with no card needed, then plans from $19 a month. It can't promise work, but it means you're not missing projects while you sleep. Check your profile for free.
Frequently asked questions
- Is PayPal available in Bangladesh for freelancers?
- Not at the time of writing (October 2026). PayPal doesn't let Bangladeshi residents receive payments. A Bangladesh Bank circular in July 2026 allowed banks to partner with foreign payment providers, and the government says talks with PayPal continue, but no launch had been confirmed.
- What is the best way to receive freelance payments in Bangladesh?
- Most freelancers use Payoneer, withdrawing to a bank account or bKash, or a platform's own bank payout in taka, such as Freelancer.com's Express Withdrawal. Money that arrives through a bank by SWIFT can also qualify for the government's cash incentive for freelancers.
- How do I get a freelancer ID card in Bangladesh?
- Apply online at freelancers.gov.bd. You need to be a Bangladeshi citizen with a valid NID and show at least USD 50 of verified freelance income in the last 12 months. At the time of writing the ID is free, digital, and valid for three years.
- Do freelancers in Bangladesh pay income tax?
- Income from listed IT and IT-enabled services has been tax-exempt from July 2024 to June 2027 if you file a return, and the 2026-27 budget moved to extend the exemption to all freelancing. Conditions apply, including receiving money through banking channels, so check with a tax practitioner.
- Do Bangladeshi freelancers get a cash incentive?
- Yes, for money received through banks. For 2026-27, Bangladesh Bank set a 2.5% cash incentive for individual freelancers exporting software and IT-enabled services. The separate 2.5% incentive on expatriates' remittances doesn't cover freelancing, and withdrawals to bKash from Payoneer don't qualify.
- Which freelancing platform is best in Bangladesh?
- Fiverr, Upwork and Freelancer.com are all widely used. Fiverr suits packaged services like design and video, Upwork suits longer contracts, and Freelancer.com suits people who like bidding on a wide range of projects and want taka payouts to a bank account.
- Can I withdraw money from Freelancer.com to bKash?
- Not directly. You can withdraw from Freelancer.com to Payoneer in USD and then from Payoneer to bKash, or use Express Withdrawal to send taka straight to a personal bank account.
- How much of my earnings can I keep in dollars?
- Under Bangladesh Bank's July 2026 rules, ICT freelancers can keep up to 50% of their export earnings in a foreign currency retention (ERQ) account, and other service exporters up to 30%. The rest is converted to taka. Ask your bank how it applies to your account.
